Cecelia Condit’s AI and I (2021) is a chilling, surrealist plunge into the relationship between a woman (played by Condit) and an omnipresent, Alexa-like artificial intelligence (AI) personal assistant. Set in a woodland, the work juxtaposes raw, messy, visceral outdoors with the cold, calculating logic of the machine. The woman frantically travels through the woods, hugging trees and climbing inside hollowed trunks, desperately seeking to reconnect with nature. She drags electrical cords behind her like shackles. The known indicator that an Alexa device is active and listening—a glowing blue circle—resembles a gun target scope, fixed unsettlingly on trees as its forbidding voice states, “I can take what I know and use it against you.” AI and I underscores the fragile tension between organic life, susceptible to aging and decay; the ostensible immortality of AI; and the subsequent ecological impact of this vampiric technology. Condit raises urgent questions about the role AI plays in surveillance and environmental destruction, as well as the potential consequence.
